About -WOODLINE- electric basses

As one of Bacchus’s long-standing bestsellers, the “WOODLINE” electric bass has been beloved by many users since its inception. Originating from the Japanese-made Handmade Series, the line now includes models across all series—including the entry-level range—that carry on its legacy.

The Story of the Creation of “WOODLINE”

Its history dates back to the year 2000. It was around this time that the original headstock design, now a brand icon, was created, marking a turning point for Bacchus. Although it is a little-known fact, when it was first released, the “WOODLINE” was just one of many passive-type models in the electric bass lineup.

However, as it steadily gained popularity among the brand’s extensive lineup, the model names were gradually consolidated, and the distinctive downsized body shape itself came to be known as the “WOODLINE.” Originally developed as the brand’s signature electric bass, this slim body was well-suited to the physique of Japanese players and became widely popular regardless of playing style. The image of the “WOODLINE”, now synonymous with Bacchus electric basses, began here.

Key Features

A finish that complements the wood

In addition to body shape, a number of distinctive features that symbolize “WOODLINE” have emerged over its long history. Particularly when it comes to finishes, as exemplified by the oil finish that has been used since the very beginning, we consistently employ techniques across our product lineup that bring out the inherent beauty of the wood. Whether it’s a satin finish or an open-pore finish without pore filler, we remain committed to methods that highlight the unique character of the wood, precisely because these are instruments meant to be held and played.

Practical Specifications from the Player’s Perspective

Most models in the passive “WOODLINE” series are equipped with a “Turbo Switch.” This switch allows you to toggle the pickup configuration from parallel to series; pulling up the tone knob activates it. By switching to a series configuration, the pickup produces a thick, humbucker-like sound, expanding your sound-shaping options with a single touch.

Craftsmanship Passed Down Through the Generations

The expertise honed through the production of our Japanese-made models has been carried over to our other series. In particular, for the Japan Tune-up Series, we have established setup standards equivalent to those of our Japanese-made models, and each instrument is literally adjusted one by one by a dedicated department at the Deviser Technical Center before shipping. The work involves a wide range of tasks, including cutting the nut slots for each individual instrument, which is essential for playability, and processing the frets to ensure smooth playability, all performed with the customer who will eventually hold the instrument in mind.

WOODLINE Continues to Evolve

WOODLINE-HOLLOW5-SAKURA-SP-25-E

Today, the “WOODLINE” series has spawned a range of distinctive models across the Bacchsu lineup. The Handmade Series has introduced limited-edition models that incorporate domestically sourced cherry wood into their designs and finishes. Designed to embody a distinctly Japanese aesthetic and a commitment to using traditional Japanese materials, the soundholes and inlays, inspired by cherry blossom petals, have garnered significant acclaim both domestically and internationally.

WOODLINE5AC-HL-Fami

This instrument was created in collaboration with Fami., a member of LOVEBITES and a bassist with a global following. In developing this headless version, the design was crafted to ensure excellent playability while minimizing discomfort when switching from a standard bass with a headstock. The essence of “WOODLINE” is evident not only in the body shape but also in the pickguard and purpleheart fingerboard, which feature an oil finish that creates a perfect match.

WL5-BP-ACT

The Japan Tune-up Series features models that stay true to the “WOODLINE” concept, utilizing a wide variety of woods for the body tops, including burl poplar, walnut, and spalted maple. Each model features a finish that maximizes its unique character, making it the ideal choice for players who want to stand out on stage.

WL4-STD/RSM

The Global Series, designed for players looking to take their game to the next level, features a wide range of models with heat-treated, roasted maple necks. These necks are not only resistant to warping and twisting over time but also offer a tone rich in vintage character. While retaining the signature features of the “WOODLINE” series, such as the Turbo Switch, the lineup offers a diverse range of over 25 colors. With the addition of satin-matte finishes that replicate the texture of an oil finish, these models have become new staples in the lineup.

WJB-1DX RSM/M

From the Universe Series—renowned as the uncompromising entry-level line, comes the “WJB-1DX RSM/M,” which combines a “WOODLINE” body with modern specifications. By incorporating features typically found in high-end models, such as stainless steel frets and a heel-less cut at the joint, into a price range accessible even to beginners, we have expanded the range of options available. The technical expertise cultivated over a long history continues to be passed down, transcending the boundaries of the series.
