Legacy and creation, a look at the upcoming rare wood Limited Guitar models!【Deviser Special Showcase 2025】

We are just 2 weeks away from the special exhibition website to be open to the public for this year’s Special Showcase!
As the various models begin to line up one after another and expectations gradually rise, a full lineup is quickly taking shape.

In today’s article, we will introduce some of the electric guitar models that will be exhibited, focusing on models made of “Japanese wood” materials, which is one of Deviser’s specialties.

Renewal of tradition through the use of Japanese wood materials

Full-scale introduction of Deviser’s Japanese wood materials

Before disclosing information on the models, we would like to introduce a little of the background leading up to the utilization of Japanese timber at Deviser.

For a long time in the guitar industry, “guitars made of Japanese wood” were out of the mainstream compared to ash and alder wood, the main materials used for guitar making, and had a strong impression of being a mere substitute for those materials.

In 2014, starting with a prototype ukulele, Deviser began full-scale production of guitars made of Sakura, or Japanese cherry wood, one of Japan’s most iconic trees. The following year, 2015, saw the birth of Deviser’s first electric guitar with a Sakura wood body top.

Since then, we have been actively working on making guitars using a wide variety of Japanese woods, including –Sakura Guitars-, which celebrated their 10th anniversary last year, as well as Tochi (Japanese Horse Chestnut), Kaede (Japanese Ash), and other woods.

Electric guitars made of Japanese wood, presented at the Deviser Special Showcase 2025 online exhibition

Here we finally introduce some of the models that will be able to find exhibited at the feature page for this year’s Special Showcase online exhibition!

An expected participant for the Special Showcase, -Tochi wood- models

This year again, we will exhibit a number of models using “Tochi” (Japanese horse chestnut) wood, which has become a familiar sight in Deviser’s limited edition models.
Even though they can all be called “Tochi”, there are many different types of grain patterns that this wood material can offer. Because of this, every special model we make with it is done by carefully assessing its grain patterns and applying coloring to make the most out of the individuality of the wood.
At this year’s Special Showcase online exhibition, guitars made of tochi wood are being produced for the Momose and Deviser brands, as well as for the Premium Collection lineup.

「Momose」Tochi wood models

The Momose brand is currently producing models with beautiful flame-grained tochi wood for the body top. These models are made of tochi wood not only for the body top, but also for the body itself, so that the acoustic characteristics of tochi, which is characterized by its rich high to mid range, can be fully appreciated.

As you can see from the F-holes of the guitars in the image above, guitars with hollow construction will also be available. For more information about these, please wait until the day the special feature page is open to the public, when specifications of the guitars themselves, such as the fingerboard and neck materials, will be revealed.

Flame Tochi × ROSETTEE

The DEVISER brand is bringing “ROSETTEE” models in the TL shape, with a beautiful flame-grained tochi wood on the body top, which gives a different impression from that of Momose models. The finish enhances the appearance of the wood grain and creates a vivid contrast.

In addition to the semi-hollow body and 25” scale, the ‘ROSETTEE’ also features a non-pickguard design. The simple body top with minimal parts and f-holes highlights the rich expression of the Japanese wood material used.

One-of-a-kind lineup, the「Premium Collection」’s Tochi models

The “Premium Collection”, a limited lineup of one-off models, is also being worked on, featuring models with a beautiful harmony of wood materials and colorings. As the description of “one-of-a-kind” implies, the models will be made with the utmost care in terms of wood, grain, and coloring, and will showcase the full extent of each of those components’ individuality.

We hope you will take an interest in the “Premium Collection” lineup, a fusion of carefully selected materials and the Aska Workshops’ technology that gives the lineup a special presence.

The “MSG model” is back after two years

MSG models are back again after their last appearance at the 2023 Deviser Special Showcase, to meet the user’s requests! Two model variations are being produced, one with Sakura wood and the other with Tochi wood on the top body. Let’s look at the Sakura variant first.

This model also shows particular attention to the ratio of the Japanese wood body top material and the wood used for the back. Normally, the top material is 4mm thick, but this model luxuriously uses a half-and-half specification of 10mm top material and 10mm back material (Value at the point of least thickness. The point of maximum thickness is 17.5 mm and 17.5 mm for the top and back).

The model using Tochi wood as the top material is finished with a blue gradient color, which brightens up the body top.

The MSG models for this year’s Special Showcase online exhibition will be available in 2 models and 2 colors, for a total of 4 variations. Please look forward to new models that inherit the traditional body shape while using wood materials unique to Japan.

A hidden wood material full of potential

An interesting model will also be introduced from the SeventySeven brand, which offers full and semi-acoustic models.
The body top of this model is made of a Japanese wood material from the Pine family. These are characterized by their straight grain, and rarely develop the grain patterns often seen in hardwoods, such as burl and flame, which are sought after in the making of high-end guitars.
However, the material we used in the models introduced here is quite rare and features a flamed grain. The specific species of Pine used for this model will be announced on the day the online exhibition special feature page goes live!

The body back is made of African mahogany, which is known for its warm sound profile. The overall appearance of the actual instrument, as well as the sound produced by the combination with the body top material, is quite noteworthy.

This model is part of the popular SeventySeven ALBATROSS family. The full details will be revealed on the day the online exhibition feature page goes live.

Miyazaki Prefecture Sakura × Momose

Other models from Momose include the brand’s first model made of Sakura wood from Miyazaki Prefecture. The body top is made of Sakura wood, while the body itself is made of mango wood, in honor of mangoes, a specialty of the prefecture.

The top of the headstock is designed with the image of a “Phoenix”, a palm tree that’s the prefectural tree. On the fretboard, inspired by its name, we have painted the feathers of the “Phoenix” and the fluttering cherry blossoms.

This model we are working to bring you will give you a taste of the prefecture’s charm from both the appearance and the sound, with particular attention to both materials and design!

Guitar made using Japanese Red Pine – JRP Guitar

In 2017, Deviser launched an unusual project to make guitars from Japanese Red Pine, a wood material taken from local trees felled by the pernicious pine weevil. This project, later called the “Red Pine Guitar Project”, was one that expanded the possibilities of guitar making by allowing guitars to be made from materials that were not commonly considered viable in guitar making.

As mentioned in the recently published preview article, we plan to exhibit these new Japanese Red Pine guitars featuring an uncommon body shape during this Deviser Special Showcase online exhibition.

We hope you will also look forward to this model, which pushes the possibilities of the guitar even further with the combination of Japanese Red Pine wood and a new body shape.
